Vietnam’s first EDGE Advanced-certified eco-wellness retreat, Auko sits along the Son River in the limestone landscape of Phong Nha-Ke Bang UNESCO World Heritage Site, with thirty tented lodges scattered across the terrain beside the largest known cave system on Earth. The retreat is operated in partnership with Lumina Wellbeing, founded by Michelle Ford, with regenerative hospitality and the wisdom of the Cham people at its core.

Overview

Phong Nha-Ke Bang has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003, covering more than 850 square kilometres of karst mountains, primary jungle, and an underground network including Son Doong, the largest cave on Earth by volume. The wider region holds 400-million-year-old limestone formations, hundreds of other caves, endemic wildlife, and centuries of Cham cultural heritage that informs much of the surrounding land’s healing tradition.

Auko is the result of a partnership between Van Phu Real Estate Development and wellness hospitality operator Lumina Wellbeing. The property has been built with strict environmental rigour, certified to the EDGE Advanced standard set by the IFC, with 65 percent energy savings, 47 percent water savings, and at least 47 percent of on-site energy generated by solar. Structures sit on elevated bamboo bridges above historic flood levels, built from reclaimed timber and engineered to adapt to monsoon water movement.

The thirty lodges fall into four types. Six Ground Lodges sit at ground level with direct jungle views, while twenty-one Canopy Lodges rise on stilts for elevated mountain perspectives. One Earth Lodge and two River Lodges are larger two-bedroom configurations sleeping up to four, suited to families and small groups. Every lodge measures 45 square metres (or 65 for the two-bedroom types), with a king bed dressed in 300-thread-count linen, an open-air bathtub under the stars, a private terrace, and modern comforts including air conditioning, wifi, and a tea and coffee station.

Stays organise themselves around three pathways. The Still Way is for deep restoration, the Wild Way for active adventure across limestone peaks and caves, and the Open Way for guests who want the freedom to move between both. All three are woven into an all-inclusive experience that includes a nightly herbal foot bath and reflexology in the lodge, hydrotherapy rituals moving from Rhassoul clay through forest rain showers to clifftop cool plunges, sound healing inside a cave, yoga in an open-air sky studio overlooking the mountains, and forest-to-table meals at Origin Restaurant. Adventures range from boat trips and jungle treks to multi-day expeditions to Son Doong with specialist partners.

Tips & Recommendations

01 / 05

Nearest Airport

Dong Hoi Airport (VDH) is the closest, with daily domestic flights from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi and a 1-hour private transfer to the retreat. Hue Airport (HUI) is an alternative with a 3-hour transfer.

02 / 05

Getting There

Most guests fly into Dong Hoi for the 1-hour transfer arranged by the lodge. Alternatives include the overnight SE19 train from Hanoi (arriving Dong Hoi at 5:20am), a 5-hour drive from Da Nang, or a motorbike adventure tour from Hanoi with a halfway stop in Vinh or Cua Lo Beach.

03 / 05

Best Time to Visit

Phong Nha has two distinct seasons. The dry season (February to August) brings warm, settled weather ideal for cave expeditions and trekking. The wet season (September to January) is greener and more atmospheric, with monsoon rain that the architecture is engineered to weather. Late spring and early autumn are the sweet spots.

04 / 05

What to Bring

Pack lightweight long-sleeved layers for jungle excursions, sturdy closed-toe shoes with grip for cave and forest walks, swimwear for the river and plunges, mosquito repellent, sunscreen, and a wide-brimmed hat. The lodge provides 300-thread-count linen and herbal toiletries; phones and wallets are deliberately put away on arrival.

05 / 05

Staying at Auko

Choose a pathway when you book. The Still, Wild, and Open Ways each shape a different rhythm for the stay, and the team can help calibrate the right one to your energy. Reserve at least one afternoon for the Rhassoul clay ritual and one sunrise for yoga in the sky studio overlooking the limestone peaks.
