Vipp Cold Hawaii
A solitary design guesthouse in Thy National Park
Vipp Cold Hawaii is a rare meeting point between raw nature and refined design, set deep within the windswept landscapes of Thy National Park on Denmark’s northwestern coast. Rising gently from dunes and plains of Leymus grass, this solitary guesthouse offers an experience defined by space, silence, and elemental beauty. Here, architecture does not compete with nature. It listens, responds, and settles into the land with quiet confidence, creating a retreat where modern living unfolds at the rhythm of wind, sand, and sea.

Overview
From a distance, the building resembles a familiar fisherman’s cottage, a typology deeply rooted in the coastal culture of Thy. As you approach, the simplicity gives way to precision. Designed by local architecture studio Hahn Lavsen, the 185-square-meter structure is a contemporary reinterpretation of the vernacular, composed of geometric forms and repeating silhouettes that blend seamlessly into the surrounding dunes. Its robust presence reflects an architecture made to endure wind, salt, and time.
The material palette is deliberately restrained. Aerated concrete mono blocks form the walls, roughly whitewashed inside and out. Untreated Douglas fir heartwood lines the roof, chosen for its ability to withstand harsh coastal conditions. Oak stable doors appear throughout the house, allowing natural ventilation while referencing the area’s agricultural past. Floors are laid in exposed brick set in sand rather than mortar, subtly echoing the beaches just beyond the windows and lending the interiors a refined, almost brutalist tactility.
Inside, the atmosphere shifts from raw to deeply considered. Interior designer Julie Cloos Mølsgaard shaped the spaces with a focus on comfort, texture, and calm. Wood, metal, glass, stone, and woven natural fibers define the interiors, where interest is created through materiality rather than color. Vipp furniture is paired with local craft, vintage elements, and works by regional artists, grounding the space firmly in its place.
At the heart of the home sits the Vipp V3 kitchen, centrally positioned as both functional core and architectural anchor. A large six-unit island in anodized aluminum is complemented by tall custom oak cabinets, opening toward dining and lounge areas that frame expansive views of the surrounding landscape. Fireplaces, custom textiles, and carefully curated artworks complete a house designed not for spectacle, but for living slowly, attentively, and well.

“When you step out the door, you step into a national park. The sensation of being in a no-mans-land, almost in a moon-landscape strikes you."
— Ebbe Lavsen, Architect
