Dá Licença
A secluded art-filled retreat in Portugal’s Alentejo
Set within the rolling olive groves of Portugal’s Alentejo, Dá Licença is a secluded estate where art, landscape, and silence exist in perfect balance. Spread across 300 acres of marble hills near Estremoz, this former olive oil property has been transformed into a refined retreat shaped by light, space, and a deep respect for place. More than a hotel, Dá Licença is an invitation to slow down, observe, and reconnect with the land.

Overview
Dá Licença occupies the historic Herdade das Freiras, an olive oil estate dating back to 1830. Perched on a hilltop and surrounded by more than 13,000 olive trees rooted in white and pink marble, the property commands sweeping views across the Serra d’Ossa forest and the fortified towns of Estremoz and Evoramonte. Despite its proximity to historic villages, the estate feels entirely removed from the outside world, defined by open horizons, long silences, and a sky that reveals the Milky Way in full clarity at night.
The project is the vision of Vitor Borges and Franck Laigneau, who left Paris after careers in art and luxury to create a place that preserves Alentejo’s disappearing cultural and artisanal heritage. Architecture and interiors are shaped by a dialogue between restored stone buildings and contemporary design influenced by Scandinavian Jugendstil, Japonism, and modernist restraint. Marble is omnipresent, from sculpted washbasins carved by local artisans to baths hewn from single blocks of stone.
Accommodation is intentionally limited. Five expansive suites ranging from 50 to 180 square meters offer private terraces or patios, with two featuring saltwater marble pools. Four junior suites open onto pergolas framing the surrounding hills. Each space contains carefully curated art pieces, natural materials, and large windows designed to follow the movement of light across the landscape. Luxury here is quiet, tactile, and unforced.
Life at Dá Licença unfolds slowly. Days are shaped by long lunches prepared with ingredients from the organic garden, afternoons by the circular pool or cactus garden, and evenings by shifting skies and deep stillness. The estate is not designed for distraction, but for presence. Dá Licença offers a rare form of hospitality rooted in time, craft, and contemplation, where the experience is as much internal as it is visual.

“The location of the property is magical, hidden among hectares of olive groves and marble rocks, extremely sunny during the day and exposed at night to a majestic Milky Way. It has been crafted like a utopia.”
