Tierra Atacama
A contemporary desert lodge built around 150-year-old adobe walls
Built behind the 150-year-old adobe walls of a former cattle corral on the Andean Plateau, Tierra Atacama unfolds across twenty-eight contemporary rooms set around a fertile oasis at the foot of Licancabur Volcano, in the heart of the driest non-polar desert on Earth. The lodge is the work of celebrated Chilean architects and a Chilean family of long-standing hospitality, and a stay is built around expert-led expeditions into the wider altiplano.

Overview
The Atacama is the driest non-polar desert on Earth, and one of the most visually arresting. From the Andean Plateau on which Tierra Atacama sits at 2,400 metres above sea level, the landscape opens onto vast salt flats, turquoise high-altitude lagoons, hissing geyser fields, snow-capped volcanoes, and the perfect cone of Licancabur on every horizon. After dark, the absence of light pollution and humidity reveals one of the most spectacular night skies on the planet.
Designed by Chilean architects Rodrigo Searle and Matías González, the hotel retains the original adobe walls of the abandoned cattle corral on which it stands. A significant 2025 renovation deepened that intent, drawing on the work of more than forty local artisans to weave Atacameño craftsmanship through every interior. The result feels both deeply rooted and entirely contemporary, with stone, timber, and woven textiles giving way to floor-to-ceiling glass that frames the desert from every angle.
The twenty-eight rooms fall into four categories. The intimate Oriente Room offers a moody indoor-outdoor layout with a canopy bed framed by views of Licancabur. The lighter, larger Poniente Room adds a sun-drenched terrace, while the 70 square metre Suite combines minimalist design with generous proportions and uninterrupted volcano views. The two-level Apartment sleeps up to six and is ideal for families or friends traveling together. Across all four, expansive windows, king beds, private terraces, and open-air showers under the desert sky remain constant.
Excursions are the engine of a stay at Tierra Atacama. Two half-day expeditions or one full-day journey are included with every night, leading guests across the desert with expert local guides to float in the mineral pools of Cejar Lagoon, walk the lunar formations of Valle de la Luna, watch dawn break over the Tatio geyser field, ride horseback through the Salt Mountains, or trace pre-Columbian petroglyphs through Rainbow Valley. Back at the hotel, the restaurant celebrates north Chilean produce, including ceviche, chañar fruit, and rica rica herbs from the kitchen garden, paired with fine Chilean wines, while Uma Spa offers an antidote to long days at altitude.

Tips & Recommendations
01 / 05
Nearest Airport
Calama Airport (CJC), with daily two hour flights from Santiago via LATAM, Sky Airline, and JetSmart. International arrivals connect via Santiago (SCL), with daily flights from Europe, North America, and Australia.
02 / 05
Getting There
A complimentary one hour and fifteen minute lodge transfer from Calama Airport carries guests across the desert to San Pedro de Atacama. Plan flights into Calama between 10am and 5pm to align with the shared transfer schedule. Private transfers and chartered flights are available by arrangement.
03 / 05
Best Time to Visit
Open all year. Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) bring the most temperate conditions and quieter trails. Summer (December to February) is hot in the day, with flamingos in the salt flats. Winter (June to August) is cooler, with snow-dusted peaks and the clearest skies for stargazing.
04 / 05
What to Bring
Layers are essential. Days are warm, nights are cold, and altitude amplifies both sun and shade. Pack thermals, an insulated jacket, sturdy hiking boots, sunglasses, a wide brimmed hat, and high-SPF sun protection. Swimwear is useful for Cejar Lagoon and the lodge pools.

Staying at Tierra Atacama
Allow time to acclimatise on day one. Schedule lower-altitude excursions early in the stay and reserve the higher-altitude expeditions, such as the Tatio Geysers or the Cerro Toco summit, for later. Save at least one slow afternoon for Uma Spa and one clear night for the stars.
