Overview

Lord Howe Island feels almost suspended in time. Situated in the Tasman Sea, around 780 kilometers north-east of Sydney, the island is only 11 kilometers long and 2.8 kilometers at its widest point. UNESCO World Heritage listed since 1982, it is protected by strict visitor limits, with only 400 visitors allowed at any one time. Around three-quarters of the island is preserved as permanent national and marine park, creating a rare sense of space, stillness, and ecological richness.

Capella Lodge is inspired by the relaxed spirit of the Australian beach house, but elevated through refined design and generous hospitality. Its nine island-styled suites are light-filled and contemporary, with custom furnishings, artworks, private decks, and basalt stone bathrooms. Each suite is designed to draw the landscape inward, whether through cameo views of kentia palms, sweeping ocean outlooks, or dramatic perspectives of Lord Howe’s volcanic peaks.

The lodge itself is made for slow island days. Capella Restaurant serves contemporary Pacific-inspired menus against a backdrop of lagoon and mountain views, while Capella Bar, Gower’s Terrace, and Kentia Lounge invite guests to linger over espresso, sunset drinks, canapés, or quiet evenings by the fire. A wet-edge plunge pool overlooks the South Pacific, and the Capella Spa offers island-inspired treatments among swaying kentia palms.

Experiences here are deeply tied to the island’s protected environment. Guests can hike through subtropical forests, climb Mount Gower with a guide, snorkel directly from the beach, kayak over coral gardens, visit Ball’s Pyramid, or feed fish in the shallows at Ned’s Beach. Yet the true luxury of Capella Lodge may be simpler: waking to mountain light, cycling quiet island roads, swimming in clear water free of marine stingers, and returning each evening to a lodge that feels sophisticated, relaxed, and quietly off the radar.
