Casona los Cedros

A refined boutique hotel in Espita, Yucatán

Casona Los Cedros is a quiet architectural refuge in the heart of Espita, a traditional Yucatecan village far removed from mass tourism. Set within a restored historic building and surrounded by tropical gardens, this intimate boutique hotel invites guests to slow down and reconnect with place, culture, and craft. Here, colonial textures meet contemporary restraint, and hospitality unfolds through architecture, cuisine, and human connection rather than spectacle.

Overview

Casona Los Cedros began as a careful architectural rehabilitation of a long-abandoned historic building that once served as a family home and later a local cantina. Under the direction of architect Laura Lecué, the project evolved into a design-led boutique hotel where the past is not erased but reinterpreted. The renovation preserves the essence of Espita’s colonial fabric while introducing a contemporary language rooted in simplicity, restraint, and calm.

Materials play a central role in shaping the experience. Chukum walls, handcrafted woodwork, natural fibres, stone, and locally sourced materials create a dialogue between tradition and modernity. Open courtyards, shaded corridors, and cross-ventilation draw from traditional Yucatecan homes, allowing the architecture to breathe with the climate and the rhythm of village life. The result is an atmosphere that feels grounded, warm, and deeply connected to its surroundings.

The property is arranged around lush tropical gardens, where aromatic plants, trees, and quiet corners frame the pool and communal spaces. Rooms are intimate and serene, offering privacy without isolation. Rather than a conventional hotel experience, staying at Casona Los Cedros feels closer to inhabiting a thoughtfully designed home, where each detail is intentional and never excessive.

At the heart of the experience lies Casona de los Cedros, the on-site restaurant led by Chef Jorge Ildefonso. His inventive yet deeply rooted approach to Yucatecan cuisine transforms local ingredients into expressive, seasonal dishes. Dining here is not an add-on but an essential part of the stay, reinforcing the property’s philosophy of connection through place, flavor, and story.

“We let the materials speak: chukum walls, handcrafted woodwork, natural fibers, and stone—all used with restraint, to create a sense of calm and connection.”
