Ecole St. Pierre Hotel

A 17-room boutique hotel built into a 19th-century French school in the heart of Galata

Three layers of Istanbul’s history meet at Ecole St. Pierre: a 13th-century Genoese defensive wall still standing in the courtyard, a 19th-century French Catholic school designed by Gaspare Fossati, and a 17-room boutique hotel reborn in the same building today. Located in the former garden of the Church of St. Pierre monastery in Galata, the property keeps each layer visible and active rather than treating any of them as ornament.

Overview

Galata is the medieval Genoese district at the foot of the Galata Tower, one of Istanbul’s most photographed landmarks. The neighbourhood has been a multicultural meeting point for nearly a thousand years, home in turn to Genoese merchants, Catholic and Orthodox churches, synagogues, French Catholic schools, Italian convents, and a continuing community of artists, musicians, and craftspeople. The original city walls, built by the Genoese between 1304 and 1317, still surface in unexpected corners across the district.

The hotel building was constructed in 1842 as Collège des Frères St. Pierre, a French Catholic school run by Italian Dominican priests and designed by Gaspare Trajano Fossati, the architect who later restored Hagia Sophia. The school operated until 1935, then served as a print workshop, a carpentry, and a family home for decades before its restoration. The neo-classical and neo-baroque facades, the original spatial volumes, and the surviving section of Genoese wall in the courtyard were all preserved through the conversion.

Seventeen rooms and suites range from 20 to 60 square metres, all overlooking the inner courtyard. Categories include the Deluxe Modern Room, the Historical Suite, and the Galata Suite with Terrace, the last of which opens onto a private outdoor space directly facing the Galata Tower. Interiors balance custom-designed furniture and contemporary detailing with preserved historic textures, hardwood parquet floors, and original stonework. Every room is equipped with 85 percent goose-down duvets and pillows, Le Labo Bergamote 22 bath amenities, Nespresso machines, and Italian linens.

The courtyard is the heart of the experience. Breakfast, lunch, and evening drinks unfold at IL CORTILE Ristorante Pizzeria, the in-house Italian restaurant whose dining room and outdoor tables are built directly into the surviving section of the Genoese walls. The hall once used by the school’s church choir now serves as a private dining space. With only seventeen rooms, the team operates with the intimate scale of a private guesthouse, with anticipatory rather than scripted service.

Tips & Recommendations

01 / 05

Nearest Airport

Istanbul Airport (IST), the city's main international hub, is around 45 kilometres north-west of Galata, with daily flights from most major global cities. Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SAW) on the Asian side is an alternative for European low-cost carriers.

02 / 05

Getting There

From IST, around 45 minutes by taxi or private transfer in light traffic, longer at peak hours. The historic fabric of Galata means there is no direct vehicle access right to the entrance, so guests are dropped at the nearest accessible point and walk the final stretch through narrow cobbled streets.

03 / 05

Best Time to Visit

Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) bring mild temperatures, clear skies, and the most pleasant walking weather. Summer (July to August) is hot and the tourist crowds peak around Galata Tower; winter (December to February) is cool and atmospheric, with fewer travelers and the courtyard at its most contemplative.

04 / 05

What to Bring

Comfortable walking shoes are essential for Galata's steep cobblestones, particularly on the descent to Karaköy. Pack layers for unpredictable Istanbul weather, modest covering for visits to mosques, and a power converter if you are arriving from outside Europe. Le Labo amenities, hairdryers, and Nespresso machines are provided in every room.

Staying at Ecole St. Pierre Hotel

Use the courtyard as the centre of your stay. Take breakfast there, return for an afternoon coffee, and end the evening with a drink alongside the Genoese walls. The team can recommend hidden churches, synagogues, artisan workshops, and cafés on the surrounding streets that most visitors never find.
