Shinta Mani Mustang
A Bill Bensley-designed Himalayan resort in the forbidden kingdom of Mustang
A collaboration between designer Bill Bensley, hotelier Jason Friedman, and Sherpa Hospitality led by Namgyal Sherpa, Shinta Mani Mustang holds twenty-nine suites inside a stone building above the high-altitude town of Jomsom in Nepal’s once-forbidden kingdom of Mustang, with floor-to-ceiling windows opening onto the Nilgiri range and the wider Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs.

Overview
Mustang was closed to outsiders for centuries. A high-altitude former kingdom hidden in the Kali Gandaki Valley between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, this section of the Tibetan plateau rises to more than 6,000 metres and has more in common with western Tibet than with the rest of Nepal. The region opens onto a high desert of arid mountains, snow-capped peaks, alpine lakes, walled medieval cities, and Buddhist culture preserved more intact here than in almost any other part of the Himalayas.
The resort is the product of three forces in unusual alignment: designer Bill Bensley, hotelier Jason Friedman, and Namgyal Sherpa of Sherpa Hospitality. The stone building itself, by Nepalese architect Prabal Thapa, almost disappears into the mountainside, with passive solar principles, deep insulation, and an internal courtyard sheltering guests from the powerful Jomsom winds.
Twenty-nine suites line the building, each with floor-to-ceiling windows onto the Nilgiri range. Interiors draw on Tibetan and Mustang traditions, with locally sourced stone, slate, and wood, hand-knotted Mt. Refuge rugs, Altai-Himalaya blankets, and original artworks by Robert Powell and Dhwoj Gurung throughout. Every bed faces the Himalayas through unbroken glass.
A stay is fixed at five nights and built around private guided expeditions. Bensley Adventure Butlers tailor each day to the guest, leading walks through the apple orchards of Marpha, the medieval village of Kagbeni, the pilgrimage town of Muktinath, and the Bon Buddhist village of Lubra. Nilgiri Restaurant rotates across five distinct menus over the stay, paired with regional wines and Mustang-inspired cocktails at the Aara Bar. The wellness program centres on the resort’s 11th-generation Amchi, an esteemed practitioner of SoRig traditional Himalayan healing, and revenue from the resort supports the Pasang Lhamu Foundation, the Sherpa family non-profit in honour of the first Nepali woman to summit Everest.

Tips & Recommendations
01 / 05
Nearest Airport
Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu is the main international gateway to Nepal. Jomsom Airport (JMO), the nearest regional airport to the resort, is reached via a 25-minute connecting flight from Pokhara, or directly from Kathmandu by private helicopter.
02 / 05
Getting There
From Kathmandu, a 25-minute flight to Pokhara followed by a 25-minute flight to Jomsom, weather permitting. Alternatively, a private helicopter from Kathmandu to the resort's private helipad takes around 90 minutes and skirts the Himalayas. A more leisurely option is to fly to Pokhara and drive up the Kali Gandaki river to Jomsom (five to six hours, subject to weather and road conditions).

Best Time to Visit
Spring (March to May) brings warm days, clear skies, and the Tiji Festival in Upper Mustang. Autumn (September to November) brings the same clarity, the Yarthung horse and archery festival in late summer, and the masked Dhekep Festival. Mustang sits in the monsoon rain shadow, so the region remains dry through the Nepalese rainy season.
04 / 05
What to Bring
Mustang sits at high altitude (around 2,700 metres at Jomsom, higher on excursions), with strong winds and dramatic temperature swings between sun and shade. Pack layered clothing including thermals, fleece, and a down jacket; waterproof walking boots with ankle support; sunglasses with UV protection; high-SPF sunscreen and lip balm; gloves and a wool hat; swimwear for the hot plunge pool and the Muktinath pilgrimage site. Discuss acetazolamide (Diamox) with your doctor before travel.

Staying at Shinta Mani Mustang
Embrace the all-inclusive five-night format. The Bensley Adventure Butlers tailor each day to your interests and fitness level, so pace yourself across the program and reserve time for the spa, the Amchi consultation, and long stretches at the window with the Nilgiri range. The hot plunge pool is unbeatable after a day on the trail.
