Solar Branco Eco Estate

A restored Azorean eco estate with ocean views

Solar Branco Eco Estate is a restored 19th century Azorean citrus estate that blends heritage architecture, low carbon luxury, and playful personality. Set just outside Ponta Delgada, this adults only retreat invites guests to slow down among gardens, ocean views, and volcanic stone cottages. It is both a sanctuary and a base for discovery, where design, sustainability, and curiosity shape the experience.

Overview

Built over 150 years ago, Solar Branco once stood abandoned before undergoing a five year restoration that carefully revived its original character. Volcanic stone walls, high ceilings, and traditional Azorean details were preserved, while modern comforts were thoughtfully integrated. The result is not a polished resort, but a soulful estate that feels lived in, personal, and deeply rooted in place.

The eight suites and cottages each carry their own identity, from the spacious Whale Suite in the main house to the standalone Ruin and the converted Pigsties. Interiors are simple, calm, and tactile, reflecting the surrounding countryside. Large south facing windows frame green hills and the Atlantic beyond. Big, deeply comfortable beds anchor each space, reinforcing the estate’s philosophy that rest is essential to adventure.

Sustainability is not an add on here. The estate operates with a ban on single use plastics, a zero food waste approach supported by its free range chickens, wildlife ponds that encourage biodiversity, and renewable energy initiatives. A donation of five euros per room per night supports the Ocean Azores Foundation, reinforcing the connection between hospitality and marine conservation.

There is also a sense of play woven through the experience. The Gin Library houses one of the largest gin collections in the world, alongside the estate’s own Ghosts of The Ocean range. Evenings might unfold with a perfect gin and tonic overlooking the hills, while mornings begin with locally sourced breakfasts featuring seasonal fruit and island produce. Solar Branco balances seriousness about sustainability with warmth, humor, and character.
