Vipp Lofoten
An architectural guesthouse on Norway’s remote Lofoten coast
Perched on the rugged shoreline of Stormolla Island, Vipp Lofoten is a quiet architectural retreat at the edge of the Arctic Circle. Raised above the rocks and open sea, this contemporary timber cabin offers a rare chance to experience Norway’s far north through design, silence, and scale. Here, landscape leads and architecture follows, creating a stay defined by light, weather, and presence rather than distraction.

Overview
Vipp Lofoten sits within the True North Lofoten Village, a carefully conceived destination dedicated to responsible tourism and deep connection to place. Developed under the architectural masterplan of Snøhetta, with individual cabins designed by Logg Arkitekter, the guesthouse reflects a thoughtful dialogue between modern design and the fragile Arctic environment. The structure nods subtly to Lofoten’s historic fishing huts, rising on slender legs above rock formations that fade into emerald waters below.
The cabin itself is a hybrid between a traditional rorbuer fisherman’s cottage and a contemporary seaside shelter. From the exterior, its minimal expression and precise timber construction allow it to recede into the landscape rather than dominate it. Large expanses of glazing orient the interior toward the sea, framing shifting light, weather, and seasonal extremes as the primary experience of the stay.
Inside, the 70-square-meter guesthouse is shaped by interior architect Cathrine M. Vonholm Edwards of Locus Design and Element Studio. The palette is restrained and dark-toned, allowing the exterior to take visual precedence. Vipp’s kitchen, furniture, and lighting are integrated with intention, balancing functionality with calm. Artworks by Magne Furuholmen soften the interior and root the space in the cultural context of the destination.
With two double bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a combined living and kitchen area, Vipp Lofoten is designed for slow habitation rather than short visits. Days unfold around the rhythm of nature: the Northern Lights in winter, endless daylight in summer, and a sense of quiet isolation year-round. This is not a place to pass through, but one to inhabit fully.
