Casa Talía

A boutique retreat in Modica, Sicily

Casa Talía is a quiet refuge suspended between land, history, and light. Perched above the Baroque city of Modica, in the heart of Sicily’s Val di Noto, it unfolds like a small, hidden village where time loosens its grip and everyday life softens into something more tactile and human. This is not a hotel designed to impress at first glance, but a place that reveals itself slowly through stone paths, shaded terraces, and the gentle rhythm of Mediterranean days. Here, architecture, nature, and memory are inseparable, creating a setting that feels less curated and more lived. Casa Talía invites guests to pause, observe, and reconnect with the essence of Sicily, not as spectators, but as temporary inhabitants.

Overview

Casa Talía was conceived by Marco Giunta and Viviana Haddad, a Milan-based couple who chose to exchange the pace of the city for a slower, more intentional life in Modica. What began as a personal relocation evolved into a long-term restoration project rooted in respect for place, craft, and cultural continuity. Rather than imposing a new vision onto the landscape, they chose to listen to what already existed, allowing the town’s history, materials, and rhythms to guide every decision.

The property is composed of a series of small, independent houses, each carefully restored using traditional Sicilian materials and techniques. Inspired by the spatial logic of Arabic medinas and Moroccan riads, the rooms do not connect internally but instead open onto a shared Mediterranean garden. This layout preserves privacy while fostering a subtle sense of togetherness, where paths cross naturally and encounters feel organic rather than orchestrated. The garden becomes the emotional center of Casa Talía, offering shade, fragrance, and a constant visual dialogue with Modica’s historic skyline.

Interiors are defined by restraint and sensitivity. Exposed stone, lime plaster, cane ceilings, and handmade tiles create a tactile, earthy atmosphere that feels timeless rather than nostalgic. Vintage objects and local craftsmanship are integrated sparingly, allowing light, texture, and proportion to shape the experience. Every room opens onto a terrace or balcony, framing panoramic views of the city and reinforcing the connection between interior life and the surrounding landscape.

Life at Casa Talía unfolds at a human pace. Mornings begin quietly in the garden, with breakfast overlooking Baroque rooftops and distant hills. Days are shaped by choice rather than schedule, whether that means wandering through Modica’s historic streets, exploring nearby towns like Noto or Scicli, driving to the coast, or simply staying still. Evenings settle gently as the light fades and the city glows below. Casa Talía is not about accumulation or activity, but about presence, atmosphere, and the rare luxury of unhurried time.

“It was love at first sight when we discovered Modica in 2001. We were looking for a special place far from the city’s noise, and we joined our visions to create a unique place in the world.”

Marco Giunta, Owner and Co-Founder

Tips & Recommendations

01 / 05

Nearest Airport

Catania Fontanarossa Airport is the most convenient gateway, around 1 hour and 30 minutes by car. Comiso Airport is closer, about 45 minutes away, with fewer but growing connections.

02 / 05

Getting There

A car is strongly recommended to fully experience the Val di Noto and surrounding coastline. From Catania, the drive follows inland routes through Ragusa province before descending into Modica. Casa Talía provides clear arrival instructions, including designated parking just outside the historic center.

03 / 05

Best Time to Visit

Spring and autumn are ideal, offering warm days, cooler evenings, and fewer visitors. Summer brings long, sun-filled days and access to nearby beaches, while winter is quiet, atmospheric, and well suited to travelers drawn to culture, food, and slow rhythms.

04 / 05

What to Bring

Comfortable walking shoes for Modica’s steep streets, light layers for changing temperatures, and a curious appetite for Sicilian cuisine. A book or journal feels particularly at home here.

05 / 05

How to Experience It Best

Casa Talía rewards travelers who slow down. Plan one or two outings per day at most, leaving space to linger in the garden, watch the light shift over the Baroque city, and enjoy unstructured time. Explore nearby towns like Noto, Scicli, and Ragusa Ibla, then return before sunset to experience Modica from above. Balance cultural excursions with coastal days at Vendicari or Sampieri, and let the house remain your constant point of calm rather than a base to rush from.
