Vipp Pencil Case

A one-of-a-kind design guesthouse inside a former pencil factory

Vipp Pencil Case is a rare urban retreat hidden within a former pencil factory on Copenhagen’s Islands Brygge. Removed from the city’s noise yet closely connected to its rhythm, this one-room guesthouse offers a sense of privacy and calm that feels almost unexpected in the Danish capital. More studio than hotel, it is a place shaped by material, light, and quiet intention, inviting guests to slow down, disconnect from urgency, and experience Copenhagen through design, atmosphere, and thoughtful simplicity.

Overview

Originally part of a Bauhaus-inspired pencil factory from the 1930s, Vipp Pencil Case occupies a quiet corner of Islands Brygge, just across the canal from Copenhagen’s city center. Rather than transforming the space into a conventional hotel, Vipp has preserved its industrial character and turned it into a singular, one-room guesthouse. The result feels restrained and intentional, a private retreat shaped by light, materiality, and silence within the city.

The 90 m² ground-floor apartment unfolds as a sequence of open, tactile spaces. A combined kitchen and dining area flows into a living space, followed by a serene bedroom and a carefully composed bathroom. Interior designer Julie Cloos Mølsgaard approached the renovation with a sculptural sensitivity, allowing raw surfaces, soft textiles, and curated objects to coexist without visual noise. The atmosphere is calm and introspective, more studio than suite.

Art and design are integral to the experience. Furniture from Vipp’s collection is paired with selected artworks, including a plaster wall sculpture by Cecilie Vår Norsahl that greets guests upon arrival. A muted palette of beige and warm greys is echoed in floor-to-ceiling Kvadrat curtains, softening the former factory windows and reinforcing the sense of enclosure and quiet. Even the original factory safe has been preserved, now repurposed for guests’ personal belongings.

Its location balances privacy with proximity. Islands Brygge offers a slower rhythm than central Copenhagen while remaining within easy reach of galleries, restaurants, and cultural landmarks. After a day in the city, returning to Vipp Pencil Case feels grounding. This is a place designed for slowing down, reflecting, and experiencing Copenhagen through atmosphere rather than itinerary.
