7132 Hotels: A Design-Led Alpine Retreat Shaped by Architecture, Water, and Stillness
Apr 20, 2026

High in the Swiss Alps, in the quiet village of Vals, 7132 unfolds as a place where architecture is not simply seen, but experienced. Defined by stone, water, and a deliberate sense of restraint, the collection brings together 7132 Hotel and the House of Architects into a singular vision of hospitality. Here, thermal bathing becomes ritual, design becomes atmosphere, and the landscape is not a backdrop, but a constant presence shaping every moment of the stay.

Here, thermal bathing becomes ritual, design becomes atmosphere, and the landscape is not a backdrop, but a constant presence shaping every moment of the stay.
A VILLAGE, A POSTCODE, A PHILOSOPHY
Vals is not a place that competes for attention. With just over a thousand residents, it moves at its own pace, grounded in tradition and shaped by the rhythms of the mountains. The name “7132” itself comes from the village’s postcode, a deliberate choice that reflects a philosophy rooted in locality rather than abstraction.
Katrin Rüfenacht, General Manager of 7132 Hotels, joined in 2019 after years in St. Moritz. What drew her was not only the architecture, but the coherence between place and experience.
“The unique architecture captivated me from the first moment,” she explains, “but it is the combination of contemporary design and tradition, together with the slow, authentic rhythm of Vals, that defines what we offer.”
Rather than creating a destination apart from its surroundings, 7132 exists as an extension of the village itself. The hotels, the thermal baths, and the landscape are not separate elements, but parts of a single ecosystem.
ARCHITECTURE AS EXPERIENCE
At 7132, architecture is not a backdrop. It is the experience.
The thermal baths designed by Peter Zumthor form the conceptual and physical core of the property. Built directly into the hillside using locally quarried Vals quartzite, the structure feels less like a building and more like a continuation of the mountain itself. Light, sound, and water are orchestrated with precision, creating an atmosphere that is often described as almost sacred.
This architectural language extends across the entire 7132 Hotels collection.
Within the 7132 House of Architects, four internationally renowned architects, Peter Zumthor, Tadao Ando, Kengo Kuma, and Thom Mayne, were invited to design rooms independently. Each space reflects a distinct philosophy, offering guests the rare opportunity to inhabit architecture rather than simply observe it.
“In total, four internationally renowned architects created spaces around the property,” Katrin notes. “From the entrance to the guest rooms and the thermal baths, architecture guides the entire experience like a journey.”
The result is not a unified aesthetic, but a layered one. Each space invites a different way of seeing, moving, and feeling.
THE THERMAL BATHS AND THE LANDSCAPE
Water has defined Vals for centuries. The thermal springs, first documented in the seventeenth century, continue to shape both the identity of the village and the experience of staying here.
At 7132 Hotel in Vals, Switzerland, access to the thermal baths is not an added feature. It is the foundation of the stay.
The baths unfold as a sequence of spaces, each with its own temperature, acoustics, and light. Guests move through stone corridors, into pools that range from cold to warm, from enclosed to open-air. Outside, the alpine landscape becomes part of the ritual, especially in winter, when warm water meets cold air and snow.
Beyond the baths, the surrounding mountains offer a quieter kind of immersion. Forests, high plateaus, and remote trails define the landscape. The experience is less about activity and more about rhythm. Walking, pausing, observing.
Natural materials reinforce this connection throughout the property. Swiss oak, stone, and quartzite appear in rooms, public spaces, and even within the spa, creating continuity between interior and exterior worlds.
“Architecture is at the core of everything we do.”
— Katrin Rüfenacht, General Manager of 7132 Hotels

THREE WAYS TO EXPERIENCE 7132
The 7132 collection is intentionally diverse, offering different ways to inhabit the same place.
At 7132 Hotel, the experience is defined by space, privacy, and refinement. With a limited number of rooms, generous layouts, and direct access to the thermal baths, it offers a more secluded and elevated stay. Dining plays a central role here, including the two-Michelin-starred restaurant 7132 Silver.
The House of Architects shifts the focus toward design immersion. Guests choose their room not by size or category, but by architect, stepping into distinct spatial concepts that shape the way they experience their stay.
7132 Glenner, located in the center of the village, offers a more relaxed and grounded alternative. It connects more directly to local life, while still providing access to the thermal baths and the broader 7132 experience.
Together, these properties form a cohesive yet varied approach to hospitality, where each stay offers a different perspective on the same landscape.
A QUIET, PERSONAL APPROACH TO HOSPITALITY
Despite its architectural significance, 7132 remains deeply human in its approach.
Personalization is not treated as a service layer, but as a fundamental principle. Each guest arrives with different expectations, and the experience adapts accordingly.
“Our guests’ needs are as diverse as the flora and fauna in Vals,” Katrin explains. “We try to understand them on a personal level, whether through conversations at breakfast or simply by observing how they move through the space.”
This attention to detail creates a sense of ease that feels natural rather than orchestrated. The atmosphere remains calm, unforced, and quietly attentive.
A PLACE TO RETURN TO YOURSELF
What defines 7132 is not a single element, but a combination of factors that rarely align so precisely. Architecture that shapes perception. Water that anchors the experience. A landscape that slows everything down.
Time behaves differently here. Days stretch. Attention sharpens. The noise of daily life fades into the background.
“We want guests to feel at home, but also inspired,” Katrin says. “The combination of architecture and the raw nature of Vals creates something that stays with people, whether they come for design, wellness, or simply to pause.”
7132 is not designed to entertain in the conventional sense. It offers something more lasting. A space to disconnect, to observe, and to return to a quieter, more intentional way of being.
“The village of Vals takes a slow approach to tourism, constantly highlighting authentic experiences. That is what we want to offer our guests.”
— Katrin Rüfenacht, General Manager of 7132 Hotels
