Eremito

A radical eco-retreat in Umbria

Hidden within a remote Umbrian valley, Eremito is a modern hermitage created for those who understand that silence is not absence, but presence. Set inside a restored 13th-century monastery, this eco-retreat offers an experience stripped of distraction and excess, inviting guests to slow down, disconnect, and return to what truly matters.

Overview

Eremito was conceived by Marcello Murzilli after a life shaped by travel, solitude, and spiritual exploration. After founding the El Charro fashion brand and creating the acclaimed eco-resort Hotelito Desconocido in Mexico, Murzilli returned to Italy with a singular vision: to create a place where modern luxury is redefined as essential living. When he encountered this abandoned monastic ruin overlooking an Umbrian nature reserve, Eremito was born.

The architecture follows the principles of medieval hermitages, restored using local stone, traditional techniques, and contemporary ecological systems. Thick walls regulate temperature naturally, candlelight replaces artificial glare, and every space is designed to calm the nervous system rather than stimulate it. The result is not nostalgia, but timelessness.

The 17 rooms, known as Celluzze, echo the cells once occupied by monks. Each is deliberately minimal: a wrought-iron bed, handmade hemp linens, stone desk, private bathroom, and a window opening onto uninterrupted green. There are no televisions, no phones, and no Wi-Fi. Comfort is present, but always quiet.

Life at Eremito follows a gentle rhythm. Days unfold between forest walks, meditation, and rest. Evenings gather guests in the refectory for a vegetarian dinner served in silence, inspired by monastic Mediterranean traditions. A rock-carved spa offers steam baths and thermal rituals, while the surrounding hills provide a constant reminder of nature’s scale and patience. Eremito is not about escape, but return.

“Eremito was born from the desire to rediscover what is essential. Silence, nature, and simplicity are not renunciations for us, but forms of a deeper luxury.”
