Vipp Townhouse

A restored medieval townhouse in Lagrasse

Vipp Townhouse is a rare opportunity to inhabit history rather than simply observe it. Set directly on Lagrasse’s medieval square, this centuries-old stone house offers an intimate stay shaped by texture, time, and thoughtful restraint. Behind its ancient façade unfolds a carefully restored three-storey home where modern design enhances, rather than overrides, the spirit of the past. It is a place for slow mornings, market rituals, and evenings framed by stone walls that have witnessed generations of village life.

Overview

Dating back to the 1350s, Vipp Townhouse stands as a quiet witness to the layered history of Lagrasse. The renovation followed strict conservation rules, preserving thick stone walls, small medieval windows, and original proportions. Rather than attempting to modernize the building visually, the project focused on clarity, balance, and respect. The result feels calm and intentional, allowing the house’s age to remain present in every room.

The 97 m² townhouse unfolds vertically across three floors. The ground floor serves as a discreet lounge space, finished with coarse pebble flooring that references the original cobblestones of the square outside. Hidden storage and a powder room are integrated seamlessly, keeping the space uncluttered and adaptable. A sculptural staircase, crafted by a local metalsmith, connects the levels and acts as both functional element and quiet artwork.

The first floor forms the heart of the house. Anchored by Vipp’s V3 kitchen island, the space is designed for gathering, cooking, and lingering. Double doors open onto a small balcony overlooking Place de la Halle, while the opposite side leads to a generous terrace for outdoor dining. The kitchen, dining area, and outdoor spaces flow together naturally, encouraging guests to engage with village rhythms.

At the top, the bedroom and bathroom merge into a single, generous suite. A freestanding shower in locally sourced red marble becomes the focal point, while mirrored storage walls amplify light and space. Furnishings are multifunctional and intentionally sparse, inviting guests to live differently, slower, and more attentively within historic walls.
