Azura Retreats: An Island Story of Beauty, Community, and Return
Apr 06, 2026

Set within Mozambique’s Bazaruto Archipelago, Azura Boutique Retreats unfolds as both a destination and a long-standing relationship with place. On Benguerra Island, where sandbanks shift with the tide and the Indian Ocean moves in endless shades of blue, Azura offers more than a stay. It offers immersion. Here, barefoot luxury is shaped not by excess, but by proximity to nature, deep community ties, and a quiet understanding that the most meaningful travel experiences are those that stay with you long after you leave.
A PLACE THAT DRAWS YOU BACK
For Gavin Louw, Sales Manager at Azura Boutique Retreats, the story of Benguerra Island is not a brief encounter but a long relationship shaped over decades of working in Mozambique’s hospitality landscape.
“I have personally been involved in the Bazaruto Archipelago since 2001,” he says. “It is an area with such strong energy and beauty that it is easy to fall in love with from the first moment you step foot on the island.”
Having spent more than twenty years immersed in the region, from early lodge operations to launching international hospitality projects in Mozambique, Gavin brings both perspective and continuity to Azura’s story. His journey reflects the evolution of the island itself, moving through moments of change while remaining anchored to the same stretch of coastline.
“I started in 2001 for the then Marlin Lodge,” he recalls. “In 2012, when it burnt in a fire, I ended up doing a few different things… eventually I had the opportunity to join Azura in February 2020, and have loved every second.”
Today, that trajectory comes full circle.
“Now Azura rebuilt Marlin, so I am back with the same property on the same beach I first set foot on in 2001.”
There is a sense here that Benguerra is not simply a destination. It is a place people return to, in more ways than one.
BUILDING SOMETHING THAT BELONGS
Azura Benguerra Island was never conceived as a standalone luxury project. From the beginning, it was shaped by collaboration and responsibility.
“The owners of Azura had built hotels in the Seychelles,” Gavin explains, “but when they set foot on Benguerra Island, they knew this was magical.”
Rather than building in isolation, they partnered with a local landowner who had an existing campsite, creating something together.
“Their vision created Azura Benguerra Island in conjunction with the community, to preserve this special land while giving back… and allowing the world to also appreciate its beauty.”
This approach remains central to the Azura philosophy. Growth is not separated from impact. It is directly tied to it.
“More guests means more need to buy more seafood, and we only buy from the locals,” Gavin says. “So more guests creates more wealth and a happier community who understand tourism and respect it.”
It is a model that feels both simple and rare: tourism not as extraction, but as exchange.
TWO EXPRESSIONS OF THE SAME ISLAND
On Benguerra Island, Azura exists in two distinct forms.
Both Azura Benguerra Island and Azura Marlin Beach share the same defining qualities: direct access to the ocean, uninterrupted sunsets, and a setting protected from the island’s prevailing winds.
“Both have the unique strength of being right on the beach,” Gavin explains. “A few steps away, facing west, so in sun all day till sunset.”
Yet their atmospheres diverge.
“Azura Benguerra is more sophisticated, mature, private and luxurious,” he says. “Where Marlin is fun, trendy, funky, vibrant and social.”
This duality allows the same destination to speak to different travelers, without compromising on what defines the experience.
“Every booking gets a dedicated butler host,” Gavin adds. “That makes for extra VIP service.”
It is not about choosing between two different places, but between two different rhythms of the same place.
“Benguerra Island has such strong energy and beauty that it is easy to fall in love with from the first moment you step foot on the island.”

THE ESSENCE OF THE AZURA EXPERIENCE
What defines Azura is not a single feature, but a combination of elements that feel both intuitive and deeply considered.
“Great service, deep care to every detail, brilliant cuisine,” Gavin says simply.
Yet what emerges most strongly is not what is offered, but how it is felt.
“There are plenty of options for private spaces for relaxation,” he explains, “and the joy to experience this energy where every villa is right on the beach.”
The setting itself becomes part of the experience.
“There is no better island in the Indian Ocean than Benguerra Island,” he says. “The sandbanks, the powdery white beaches, the world-class diving and snorkeling, and the 99.9% sunshine all year.”
Time softens here. Days are shaped less by schedules and more by light, tide, and mood.
A QUIET COMMITMENT TO DOING THINGS RIGHT
Sustainability at Azura is not positioned as an added layer. It is embedded into how the retreats operate.
“We have to protect the beauty of the precious land,” Gavin says. “Solar versus gas or diesel is a no-brainer.”
Each stay contributes to reforestation efforts.
“We plant three trees for every booking to neutralize the carbon footprint.”
But perhaps more importantly, the relationship with the local community remains central.
“We give back through guest booking funds,” he explains, “but more important is the local integration. With two hotels, we now hire way more local staff too.”
The result is not a curated version of sustainability, but a working system where environmental care and community benefit are inseparable.
LEAVING BETTER THAN YOU ARRIVED
At its core, Azura is driven by a simple but ambitious intention.
“We want to ensure your life will be better from visiting Azura than if you did not.”
It is a statement that reflects both confidence and clarity.
“We thrive in delivering brilliance and offering serendipity with a smile,” Gavin adds. “That is why we have a 40% repeat guest statistic.”
There is no attempt to overdefine the experience. Instead, Azura creates the conditions for something personal to happen. Something that extends beyond the stay itself.
“Azura really is magical,” he says.
“More guests creates more wealth and a happier community who understand tourism and respect it. This is the perfect sustainable model.”
