Eremito: A Contemporary Hermitage Rooted in Silence and Simplicity

In the hills of Umbria, far from roads, signals, and the constant pull of attention, Eremito exists as a deliberate retreat from modern life. Set within a restored 13th-century monastery inside a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it offers something increasingly rare: a space where silence is protected, time slows, and simplicity becomes the defining form of luxury. This is not a hotel designed to entertain. It is a place designed to restore.

A VISION BORN FROM ESSENTIAL LIVING

Eremito was created by Marcello Murzilli, whose path to this quiet valley began far from it. After founding the El Charro fashion brand and later developing the eco-resort Hotelito Desconocido in Mexico, his work gradually shifted toward a deeper question: what does meaningful hospitality actually offer?

The answer was not more, but less.

“Eremito was born from the desire to rediscover what is essential,” Marcello explains. “Silence, nature, and simplicity are not renunciations for us, but forms of a deeper luxury.”

When he discovered this abandoned monastic site overlooking the Umbrian landscape, the vision became tangible. Rather than transforming it into a conventional retreat, he chose to preserve its original spirit, creating what he calls a “contemporary hermitage.”

A place not to escape life, but to reconnect with it.

THE SPIRIT OF A CONTEMPORARY HERMITAGE

Eremito does not imitate monastic life. It translates it.

The architecture remains intentionally austere. Thick stone walls, hand-restored using traditional techniques, regulate temperature naturally. Candlelight replaces artificial brightness. Spaces are designed not to stimulate, but to quiet the senses.

The 17 rooms, known as Celluzze, reflect this philosophy. Each is minimal, almost monastic in its restraint. A wrought-iron bed, natural linens, a simple desk, and a window opening onto uninterrupted nature. There is no Wi-Fi, no television, no external noise.

What emerges is not absence, but clarity.

The atmosphere is shaped as much by what is removed as by what remains. Gregorian chants in the evening. Forest silence during the day. The subtle rhythm of light shifting across stone.

“Guests find themselves embraced by silence and by the rhythm of nature,” Marcello says. “It creates space for introspection and for a different way of experiencing time.”

A DIFFERENT RHYTHM OF STAY

At Eremito, experience is not curated through activity, but through rhythm.

Days unfold without pressure. Morning light enters slowly. Time expands. There is space for walking, reading, resting, or simply observing the landscape. The surrounding hills, forests, and protected reserve become part of the experience, not something to be checked off.

Evenings follow a more defined ritual.

Guests gather in the refectory for a vegetarian dinner served in silence, inspired by monastic traditions. The absence of conversation is not imposed as restriction, but offered as an invitation. Attention shifts. Food becomes more present. The act of sharing space takes on a different meaning.

Every detail supports this intention. No distractions. No excess. No urgency.

“Silent dinners, digital detox, and the absence of distractions offer a rare opportunity to listen to oneself,” Marcello explains.

For many, this becomes the most unexpected part of the stay.

SIMPLICITY AS A FORM OF LUXURY

Eremito challenges a fundamental assumption in hospitality: that luxury is defined by abundance.

Here, luxury is redefined as precision. As intention. As the removal of what is unnecessary.

The retreat operates with a strong ecological and ethical framework. Built using local materials, powered by sustainable systems, and committed to environmental responsibility, Eremito was among the first eco-retreats in Italy to receive B-Corp certification.

But sustainability is not presented as a feature. It is embedded in how the place functions.

“Our philosophy is guided by simplicity, sustainability, and authenticity,” Marcello says. “True hospitality lies in creating a space where guests feel both protected and free, immersed in beauty without excess.”

This positioning matters commercially. Eremito is not competing with luxury resorts. It is defining a different category altogether: one where emotional and mental restoration become the primary value drivers.

WHAT GUESTS TAKE WITH THEM

The impact of Eremito is rarely immediate. It unfolds quietly, often becoming clearer only after departure.

“Our wish is that every guest leaves not only rested, but also inspired,” Marcello reflects. “That they bring some of that simplicity back into their own lives.”

That is the real product.

Not the room. Not the setting. But the shift in perception.

Time slows. Attention sharpens. The need for constant stimulation fades, even if only temporarily.

Eremito does not try to hold guests there. It prepares them to leave differently.

A PLACE THAT RESISTS NOISE

In a world built on speed, visibility, and constant input, places like Eremito are increasingly rare. Not because they are difficult to build, but because they require restraint.

They demand clarity of vision and the willingness to say no to expectations.

Eremito stands as a quiet counterpoint. A place where silence is protected, simplicity is intentional, and experience is internal rather than external.

It does not aim to be for everyone.

But for those who arrive with the right intention, it offers something few places can: the space to hear themselves again.
